「即位」に関わる英語
令和の幕開けに際し、「即位」に関する英語表現を考察してみたい。(「退位」は別項で)
I．まずは「（新）天皇に即位する」という動詞
1. accede
この動詞は基本的に自動詞で accede to the throne of Japan のように to を伴う。し
かし、実際には accede the throne of Japan のように他動詞用法も見られる。この
点は更に調べてみたいが、詳しい方がおられれば教えていただきたい。
2. ascend
この動詞は自動詞として ascend to the (Japan’s) Chrysanthemum Throne のように
to を伴って用いられるとともに、他動詞として ascend the … Throne のようにも用
いられる。Google検索では自動詞用法がやや多いようだ。
3. be enthroned
通例受動態で The Crown Prince will be enthroned on April 1 as new Emperor (of Japan).（皇太子殿下は４月１日新天皇に即位される）のように用いられる。
3. take
take the throne のように他動詞。４文字で短いので、見出しなどに向いていると思
われる。
そのほか、inherit the throne（皇位を継承する）のような表現もある。
II.「即位」という名詞
- ascension
「（高位に）登ること」を意味し、someone’s ascension to the Imperial throne の
ように用いる。
- coronation
「戴冠（式）」にあたり、The coronation ceremony is scheduled for October 22.
（即位礼は１０月２２日に予定されている）のように用いられる。
- accession
「即位」の格式語。someone’s accession to the Chrysanthemum throne のように用
いられる。
- enthronement
The enthronement of the new Emperor marks the beginning of the new era.（ご即位
をもって新時代の幕開けとなる）のように用いられる。
頻度的には、だいたい上の順序。
